Roy Johnson

     For most of his life, Roy Johnson has been a man of many hats. Math teacher, Music teacher, Entrepreneur, Minister of music,   Instruction Aid Assistant, Community Band Director, Choreographer, Music Tutor, Disc Jockey,  Instructor/Counselor, Theatrical Music Director, Free Lance Musician, Store Manager, Lab Technician, and  Optician.
     Roy is currently the Director of Bands at Esperanza Middle School.  He has also been the Minister of Music for St. Peter Claver Church for the past 22 years where he directs, prepares and conducts weekly rehearsals for the children, men and gospel choirs. Roy also serves as a part time pianist for St Luke’s Young Adult Gospel Group.
     Roy is a member of the Minority Business Alliance (MBA) being the founder and owner of  Roy’s Studio of Music established in 1996. Formally located in Prince Frederick, and now located in Great Mills to provide private lessons, DJ  services, studio work, musical instrument rentals, and supply sales services.
     Johnson first learned to play piano, trumpet, trombone and tuba in Middle School, and before graduating from Northern High School,  was awarded the John Phillip Sousa Award in recognition to the best overall senior instrumentalist. He has also performed with members of the Baltimore Symphony. He has received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he performed with the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Choir.  In 2002, he became the Veronica Carroll Rothwell Teacher of the Year recipient in acknowledgment of teaching excellence.
     Roy has been the store manager of Ralon Music store in Prince Frederick, as well as Director of the Calvert Community Band also known as the Calvert Dance Band. He has played piano accompaniments for several Northern and Calvert High School Choirs, as well as assisted many other schools in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia as an instructional aid assistant, teachers aid, low brass instructor, piano accompanists. Roy has also produced written and co-wrote many CD’s including the “Last Mile of The Way” for gospel singing artist Robert Loyd.
     Johnson has worked as a music director and piano instrumentalist for several Patuxent Playhouse productions including “Gypsy”, “Godspell” and “Murder at Rutherford House”. He accompanied, assisted as music director, and played the role of Johnny Casino, in “Grease” and provided the voice of the plant “Audrey II” in “Little Shop of Horrors”. He also wrote, produced, and arranged the musical “Get Ta Steppin” in 1998.
